The ignition coil constitutes an electric transformer which raises the voltage by electromagnetic induction between the two windings that it contains. The low voltage primary winding connects to the 12 volt battery while the secondary winding transforms the voltage into a high tension electric current of 15 thousand or 20 thousand volts.
